This news item here says “Three plane passengers arrested for not turning off their mobile phones.”
From what the article mentions, this doesn’t seem to be a rule outside India as yet. A couple of months back when I was on my way to Hyderabad from Madras, there was huge family traveling on the same flight. There were some 10 aunties/uncles and I got seated with them! I’m not very fond of flying and this family was overtly enthusiastic about the journey.
One of the uncles decided it was time to educate the women and kids in the family about cell phone towers. So, every time the air hostess wasn’t around, he’d switch on his phone try to figure out if he could identify the aircraft’s position using the cell area displayed on the screen. When the air hostess asked him to switch it off, he’d wait for her to pass and do it under the seat, hiding it from her view. Reminded me of text messaging under the desk in college! 🙂
Putting trays back during landing and switching off cell phones in flight will never be popular flying rules I guess!
